![]() 1987: During a report on mysterious thefts, April O' Neil met the TMNT after they saved her from a group of punks. After awakening in their home, Hamato Yoshi told April how he was changed into a rat named Splinter at the same time the Turtles were mutated into the wisecracking heroes they are! She and the Turtles then set out to discover who was burglarizing all those technological companies, which quickly lead them to the Foot Clan.; After the defeat of his robotic Foot Soldiers, Shredder turned two of his punks, Bebop and Rocksteady into mutants. The Turtles also learned that Shredder is actually Oroku Saki, the man who had usurped Splinter's leadership of the Foot.; Shredder enlisted the help of a mad scientist named Baxter Stockman whose invention, the Mouser nearly spelled doom for Splinter. Unbeknownst to him, Shredder's alien sidekick Krang sabotaged his plans by helping Michaelangelo.; Shredder then brought forth two of Krang's Rock Warriors from his homeworld in Dimension X. Teenage type creatures known as Neutrinos also arrived from the portal and soon teamed up with the Turtles and helped defeat the villains once again!; In the season's climax, Shredder built Krang an android body, which nearly caused the end for the city when he grew into a monster-sized robot. Luckily, the Turtles quickly came to the rescue in the Turtle Blimp. Krang opened the gateway to Dimension X in attempt to bring forth his minions, when the TMNT arrived to fight while Donatello reversed the flow of the portal, causing the Technodrome to pull itself into the portal while the Turtles escaped. ![]() 1988: With the Technodrome trapped in Dimension X, Shredder returned to seek revenge on the Turtles. Since he wasn't given any further help from Krang, he sought the help of Baxter Stockman who aided him in locating the Eye of Sarnath, a magic alien crystal divided into three pieces.; After making one screw up too many, Baxter was sent to Dimension X to be killed, while Bebop and Rocksteady came back to Earth. Krang attempted to vaporize Stockman, however, a one-in-a-thousand glitch caused the mad scientist to be cross-mutated with a fly.; At one point, Shredder asked for more mutagen, but it was sent to the wrong place and four frogs in a Florida swamp were mutated. Shredder trained the frogs to be his loyal minions, while leading them to believe he was a goodguy. Fortunately though, Splinter and the TMNT were able to set the frogs straight by proving just how evil The Shredder truly was!; Donatello gave Master Splinter an opportunity to be human again, only it didn't last long and he changed back into his rat form... in public.; April was temporarily transformed into a humanoid cat due to the side effects of a teleportation beam. April's co-worker/friend Irma got a chance to meet the Turtles in that episode.; The Technodrome returned to Earth, but Don managed to send it down towards the center of the Earth. ![]() 1989: This season had over 40 episodes; All except two involved Shredder and Krang plotting to return the Technodrome to the surface. Sometimes certain characters would have substitute voices for a few episodes. The TMNT met The Rat King, Leatherhead, Casey Jones, Lotus Blossom, Usagi Yojimbo and a young man named Zach who was granted the position of an honorary Ninja Turtle. Most of these characters and ones from the first 2 seasons made return appearances within this season. Shredder and Krang once attempted to control the city by reversing the gravity flow, which caused some major chaos.; In the heat of a battle at Cybertech Labs, Splinter and Shredder were accidentally subjected to a beam that caused their minds to be transferred into one another's body. Shredder sought to kill the Turtles in the guise of their master while Splinter sought to reverse the mind transfer in order to save them.; Irma became closer with the Turtles after she was enlarged into a 50 foot tall woman on her birthday and they had to cure her before the army could take her into custody.; Michaelangelo became human for one episode thanks to a batch of cookies contaminated with anti-mutagen, only the mutation was highly unstable and he kept switching between human and mutant turtle form.; Baxter Stockman returned to exact his revenge with the help of an alien spaceship that supplied him with a mutation ray-gun, which he used to turn Shredder into a housefly and Mikey into a gerbil.; In the season finale, the Technodrome returned to the surface again. Krang almost sent Earth to Dimension X, but Donatello managed to send the Technodrome through the portal instead! ![]() 1990: Ten of these episodes were the series' last weekday afternoon lineup. The plots in these adventures were very goofy ones, such as Leonardo and Michaelangelo being turned into little children by an age reversing serum of Krang's, so he could sell them to an alien zookeeper.; Bebop and Rocksteady were disguised in holographic cloaks to make them appear human so they could sneak into Channel 6 and plant rocket boasters in the basement, but they wound up becoming program execs for the TV station.; In one peculiar episode the Turtles had to keep a baby Neutrino safe from Shredder and his mutant punks.; Krang created a ray that altered humans' personalities, making them act like timid rabbits. It was up to Leonardo and Raphael to find the antidote, which could only be found in a strange fairy tale dimension. Along the way, they met Hokum Hare, from The Tortoise and the Hare. With Hokum's help, the Turtles retrieved the crystal and saved Earth.; In the following episode, Hokum discovered Shredder and his goons were plotting to take over the future via a train-powered temporal wave distortion. Hokum informed the TMNT who hitched a ride on the train to the year 2036, where they discovered that their older selves were no more than a bunch of crodgedy old farts! CBS began airing the show on Saturday Morning two episodes in a row each week. In the first half hour we'd see the Ninja Turtles fighting Shredder, while in the second half hour there would be an episode where one of the Turtles separated himself from the others and find out about a random evildoer. Raphael almost got a girlfriend when he met Mona Lisa, a salamander type mutant on a cruise ship.; One episode had Rocksteady and Bebop dressed as super heroes.; In another episode, Michaelangelo actually got to meet a super hero with bug like powers (Gee, I wonder where they got that idea).; An evil mutant turtle from Dimension X known as Slash was in one of the most memorable episodes of the series!; April went to investigate a UFO sighting in a small town called High Falls, and Leonardo decided to follow along where he ran into one of the locals, Billy Jim Bob, who mistook him for an alien. Leo soon found himself being chased by a crazy mob, while April was kidnapped by the real villain of the story whose Vita-Ray Beam Gun could increase the size of fruits and vegetables. After teaming up with Billy Jim Bob and reuniting with his brothers, Leonardo managed to rescue April and save the day!; In one of my favorite episodes, Raphael unwittingly was exposed to a Personality Transmogrifier while sitting in a cab, causing his mind to get switched with the cab driver's. Raph and the cabbie never realized that they were in one another's body, even when they looked at one another, or themselves. When the other Turtles found out what happened to their brother, they set out with April to find the device so they could reverse the effects. Meanwhile, a gangster known as Mr. Big and his assistant Little Huey were out to use the Transmogrifier for their own criminal purposes. After a kidnapping and a wild 4-way car chase, Raphael and the cabbie's minds were restored to their right bodies! ![]() 1991: In the opening ep to this season, Shredder's brother, a Metropolitan police officer aided the Turtles in stopping Krang from bringing the Technodrome back to New York. Donatello managed to have it sent to the frozen Arctic instead.; Michaelangelo made some interesting new friends this season, such as Mondo Gecko, a badass skateboarding lizard with a heart of gold!; Mikey also got involved with a group of Egyptian mummy fanatics who believed him to be the great Ahmed Turtle. It was up to them and the other Turtles to save the city from a madman trying to gain powers from a comet by crashing it into Earth.; Raphael had a life-and-death crisis where he thought he only had 24 hours left to live, so he went off dressed in a buccaneer type outfit and risked his life to help people as The Green Defender.; The Turtles' young friend Zach had been reading way too many comic books and his accident-prone imagination wound him up in military school where he found out the place was being run by two aliens known as Wingnut and Screwloose.; In a special hour long prime-time episode, the Turtles met up with a friendly alien race known as Turtleoids who were being bullied by a giant 2 headed monster, while Shredder and Krang were busy with their own evil plans back on Earth. ![]() 1992: At this point in the series, the writers stopped having one episode with Shredder followed by an ep featuring just one Turtle and a random villain. The first ep of this season had Leonardo missing from the rest of the group. When the other three Turtles had to go fight Bebop and Rocksteady, the goons found out and told Shredder, thus giving him a fiendish idea- sending Bebop off cloaked to look like Leo and wreak havoc, which would confuse the heck out of everyone else.; After the Technodrome broke free from the ice patch, the Turtles sank it into the Atlantic Ocean. From that point on, the modules were made to have aquatic capabilities.; Krang's android body went on a rampage via a video game chip Bebop and Rocksteady planted inside.; In one unforgettable episode, Michaelangelo accidentally turned his brothers into toddlers while fooling with a machine of Donatello's (This was based off a similar episode from 1990.); Leonardo was revealed to be frightened to death of snakes until he faced a scientist who had actually been turned into one.; In an amusing episode dealing with Raphael and his moody attitude, the cranky terrapin was accidentally exposed to Donatello's Personality Alteror and became Mr. Nice Guy. The guys had no idea what caused Raph to be such a sweet turtle, so they sent him off to a shrink, who turned out to be very unprofessional. ![]() European Vacation Episodes: These were also Lost Episodes that first aired in 1993 on the USA Network, but they fit plot-wise with 1990. For some odd reason Raphael was played by a different actor. In Venice, Shredder and Krang threatened to flood the city unless their demands were met, but the TMNT managed to save the day as usual!; While the Turtles were in Ireland, Krang used a device which shot a concentrated beam in the form of a rainbow that could transform harmless animals into hideous beasts, and vice versa. Bebop and Rocksteady were actually turned into cute little mutants, while Michaelangelo became a Reptilian Hulk!; In another episode, Shredder and the goons tried returning the Technodrome to Earth by attempting to make the Orient Express into a runaway train bomb.; A strange alien couple stealing priceless works of art in Italy mistook the TMNT for their own renaissance namesakes and attempted to collect them. Thinking fast, the Turtles fooled the aliens into thinking the paintings were merely cheap knockoffs. ![]() 1993: Mid-way through this season James Avery, voice of The Shredder left the show, yet his character remained on the series voiced by a different actor. While fighting Shredder single handily, Donatello experienced an electric shock which sent him into berserk mode, where he dressed himself up as a super hero stereotyping Batman and tried to finish off Shredder for good. At the same time, an alien race known as the Triceretons came to conquer Earth.; In another episode, Krang hypnotized the Neutrinos, making them act like road-raging delinquencies (not too much of a stretch) and were sent to chase the Turtles, while Rocksteady and Bebop set out to find a video tape that revealed the blueprints of a secret invention that could free the Technodrome via hover-conversion. After bringing the Neutrinos to their senses, the TMNT managed to prevent Krang and Shredder from bringing the Technodrome back to dry land; In another outrageous story, Shredder sought vengeance against the Turtles by sending a rogues gallery of seven old enemies including Leatherhead, the Rat King and two never before seen characters known as Scumbug and Antrax (whom the Turtles apparently met offscreen). At the same time, Splinter gathered a small group of human allies to assist him in rescuing the TMNT.; In the season finale, The Technodrome resurfaced on the beach and the Turtles were banished to Dimension X where they had a brief rumble with alien slave traders. Meanwhile, Rocksteady and Bebop were terrorizing April and the rest of the Channel 6 news crew when Splinter came to their aide. Moments later, Irma went into sudden Rambo mode when she took a laser gun and used it to short circuit Krang's android body. Once the Turtles returned to defeat Shredder, Donatello sent the Technodrome back through the portal to Dimension X without anyone inside of it but the Rock Warriors and Foot Soldiers. ![]() 1994: This was the season where the series went into a major format change known as the Red Sky episodes, because instead of daytime or night, it was always sunset outside. The Turtles themselves had a slightly different appearance, while April had an entire new wardrobe and started driving a red sports car. Rat King and Casey Jones each had a final guest appearance during this season. After Shredder blew up Channel 6, April's boss Mr. Thompson had the Turtles blamed for it and they became convicts.; The Turtles had to battle a group of mutants from over 60 years in the future known as H.A.V.O.C., and were eventually helped by a man from that time known as Krakus, whose father's life apparently is saved one day by April. When the leader of H.A.V.O.C. kidnapped April, Krakus feared that his own existence would be in jeopardy, so he had Donatello mutate him.; The Turtles were abducted by aliens who accused them of crashing their spaceship (which was actually Shredder and Krang's doing). When they escaped, the Turtles found cybernetic suits that gave them amazing cyber armor (which was based on the Cyber Samurai toys Playmates made around that time).; Shredder, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady returned to the Technodrome in Dimension X, where the Turtles vanquished them once and for all! In my personal opinion this season would've been a wonderful way for the series to end production, with such a perfect final episode! ![]() 1995: This was the point where the show got extremely odd. The Turtles and a new friend named Carter faced a devious alien named Dregg who succeeded in making the people of New York believe he came in peace. The Turtles were having troubles with their mutations and would sometimes turn into hideous monsters. Carter came into contact with some of Donatello's mutagen sample and was given an the ability to mutate himself into a strange yellow creature. Eventually, April was able to reveal Dregg's evil intentions to the city and the TMNT sent him back to where he came from! ![]() 1996: This was the tenth and final season of the cartoon. Sadly though, Rob Paulsen, the original voice of Raphael decided to quit at the time these episodes were made. After an incident where Leonardo became a barbaric monster, the Turtles were finally able to put an end to their freakish mutating. However Carter's was irreversible, which really didn't make sense considering he's always been human and therefore should've been the easiest to cure (I.E. retro-mutagen ray).; In the first and only three-part story, Dregg returned for another full scale invasion and took his revenge on the Turtles by draining their strength from them and having them stored into himself. Krang and Shredder, who were brought back to Earth, also took part in this fiendish plot! Carter had Landor and Merrik go back in time to bring the TMNT of 1994 to the present in order to help save April and the TMNT of 1996. After the Turtles of the past helped defeat Dregg and Shredder, they were sent back to their time and Landor and Merick took Carter with them to the future so they could help cure his mutation.; Dregg attempted to take over the world's military defenses with the aide of an alien mob boss known as the Globfather who was sent to steal a protein computer, a device that enabled anyone to control electric devices through thoughts.; In another incident, Dregg tried to suck Earth into a warp sending it to Dimension X, but the Turtles and Master Splinter managed to thwart his plans and send his ship into a black hole where it was destroyed.; In the final episode, Krang's android body and the Technodrome made a special appearance in the Turtles' final fight against Dregg when he returned in the form of a giant creature from the combined strength of several other alien creatures. In the final scene, Splinter told the Turtles that he was no longer their sensei and that he had taught them all he knew. ![]() The show had a number of writers over its 100+ episode run, but the most famous writer had to be the late David Wise who penned the very first five episodes and created many of the memorable characters from that first season. Mr. Wise is also known for writing episodes of Transformers, Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers and several other popular cartoons from the 1980s. On December 10th, 2010 I decided to do a short interview with him over Facebook Messanger and ask some questions I've wanted to know about the series. He answered back on Christmas Eve just a couple of weeks later. JEPHAEL: Who was your favorite character to write? DAVID: The Turtles, all four of 'em! JEPHAEL: Where did the idea for the Neutrinos come from? DAVID: A combination of story logic and personal taste. Dimension X is a place of constant war. Who would be the most likely to flee such a place? Kids who just wanna have fun. Plus, they are teenage outcasts, like the Turtles. Even by episode four (which is where they first appeared) the show had so many wacky science fiction elements that I thought it would be fun to make these kids a sort of 1950's juvenile delinquent sci-fi movie types. So I designed them to be kind of "Jetsons meet The Wild One". JEPHAEL: Raphael's smart alecky persona in the cartoon was a major departure from his comic book counterpart's angsty behavior. Was that your idea or someone else's? DAVID: I wrote the five-episode pilot working pretty much entirely from the first few issues of the comic. Never spoke to Eastman, Laird, or Playmates. My only supervision came from Fred Wolf. So of course I thought his personality up! Actually, I think it's incorrect to say that Raphael had an "angsty" personality. At that point, in the comics (April 1987) the Turtles had virtually no personality. I told Fred Wolf the first thing I wanted to do was to give them different characteristics, because there was nothing to differentiate one turtle from another in the comic, except the weapons they were holding. I created their characters very specifically to make them as different from one another as possible, just as the four Beatles or the four Marx Brothers are similar yet different personalities. I needed a leader, an expert in bushido (the Japanese way of the warrior) who was a straight-arrow; that became Leonardo. Because there would be a lot of sci-fi gadgetry in the show I needed a tech geek; that became Donatello's role. Because I intended to put a lot of humor in the series (these are TURTLES after all), I needed a wise-guy to bounce jokes off the serious stuff; that became Raphael. And I wanted the fourth character to really embody the fact that they were TEENAGERS; I decided on a surfer personality (like Sean Penn's character in Fast Times at Ridgemont High) and that became Michaelangelo. JEPHAEL: Mona Lisa is a very popular character. Why did she only get to be in one episode? DAVID: I don't know. Jack Mendelsohn story edited that episode. I had nothing to do with it. JEPHAEL: I've always wanted to see the Turtles meet characters from other cartoons like Duck Tales or The Simpsons. Would you have done a cross-over story at some point? DAVID: Something like that would NEVER happen. The rights issues could never be worked out. And I don't think it would work. I very specifically created a world where the Turtles could believably exist. Take them out of that world and plop them somewhere else and the premise would fall apart. That said, we DID do a couple of "crossover" shows with Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo. But he came into the Turtles' world, not the other way around. JEPHAEL: How come in the episode where we meet Shredder's brother his name is Kazuo Saki, instead of Oroku Kazuo? Why not just have him be the cartoon version of Oroku Nagi? DAVID: I had nothing to do with that episode either. Jack and I were splitting the story editing responsibilities, and that was one of his scripts. JEPHAEL: If you could go back and rewrite anything in the series, what would you change? DAVID: My contract, so that I got a percentage of the merchandising! JEPHAEL: LOL!!! Thanks again, Mr. Wise! |
